6 Incredible Experiences To Have In Mossel Bay | Exploring South Africa!
It’s been 2 weeks that I moved into South Africa for an amazing wildlife photography project for Africa Media, and I couldn’t feel more blessed to have the experiences I had just in these two weeks. Throughout my journey, I’m hoping to show you all the great parts of South Africa including the hidden gems that you might never hear anywhere else. I know for most people, South Africa is pretty much about Cape Town and Johannesburg to some extent thanks to the World Cup.
In this post, I’m gonna talk about Mossel Bay, the little coastal harbor town that we moved in. I assume you haven’t heard of Mossel Bay before, so I’ll help you out to prepare a good plan to visit this little town.
To Get There
From Cape Town you can take one of those 45 minutes domestic flights to George since it takes more than 4 hours from Cape Town to Mossel Bay by driving. There are so many airlines but I’d suggest South African Airways. After you land to George it takes only 20 minutes to drive to Mossel Bay. If you don’t travel with a local, I’d suggest you arrange a pick-up from the airport. Don’t be surprised that drivers are on the right side of the car just like in the UK. Also, don’t forget to book accommodation.
Now since we did our housekeeping let’s talk about what you can do in Mossel Bay.
What To Do In Mossel Bay?
Surfing In The Ocean
Mossel Bay has amazing opportunities and waves for surfers. Almost every day, many surfers gather around on good spots to catch waves and many photographers set their tripods from a nice distance to get cool shots of these surfers during golden hour. I came here during winter, yet it was nice and sunny almost every single day. Well, it’s chilly and very cold in the water but I’m sure you’ll handle it with a wet suit.
If you don’t know how to surf and want to learn in Mossel Bay there are some cool places that teach for very cheap and also great surf shops that you can get fully-equipped.
They are BIG! They are the cutest! And they eat a lot. Of course, I’m talking about elephants. One of my funniest experience here was the Elephant walk in Indalu Game Reserve which was just 40 minutes of distance by a car drive. Indalu has big luxury accommodation as well if you want to stay longer and try the other experience tours.
We did the elephant walking in which they let you walk with the elephant for almost an hour, take all the photos or videos you want while experienced guides are explaining you all the information and cool facts about elephants. In the end, we got to feed the lovely elephants and it was so fun that little ellies grabbing the food from our hand so quickly!
Here is an interesting one. I bet many of you did wakeboard on water or snowboard. How many of you tried sandboarding before? There are limited places on the world that you can have these experiences and here very close to Mossel Bay you have that chance. So why not give it a try? Grab a Go-Pro and double the fun with good memories and videos.
Drive 35 km outside of Mossel Bay to Dragon Dune and enjoy the longest sandboarding dune in South Africa! I’m sure you will love the experience and feel the adrenalin. The experience costs 400 South African Rand which is equal to 28$. You can’t find this type of experiences for such a cheap price in everywhere! You might wanna check the Dragon Dune website and contact them before you go.
The Worlds Biggest Bridge Bungee Jumping
Do you think you have what it takes to jump from 216 meters high? South African’s are very proud of this bridge. If you are feeling ready for this, you will have to drive to the Bloukrans River Bridge. It’s located on the east, 2.5 hours of drive from Mossel Bay. I can tell you that 2.5 hours of the drive is nothing to get the ride of your life. You will leave all your fears behind after this jump and come up again as a fresh person pumped with adrenalin. As mentioned adrenalin, our lovely company which organizes the jumps from the bridge is called Face Adrenalin.
If you want to book your place in advance, you can do it from here. Don’t delay this jump and overthink it because that never makes it easier. The staff is so cool, they love what they do every day, play cool music and dance with it to get you in the mood during your jump. They have an “ALL included package” which includes your jump, the edited video of it and a souvenir t-shirt for only 1800 Rand which is equal to 130$ US. Believe me, if you do extreme sports in the United States or in Europe, just the experience itself costs this much.
Diving With Great White Sharks
I don’t know about you, by the time I saw all these activities next to each other, I would book my ticket to South Africa in a second! You can basically finish almost half of your adventure bucket list just in South Africa, or maybe, even more, depending on your list. If all of the previous ones weren’t enough to get you excited, how about diving in a cage to have the first-class experience with great white sharks, which is one of the wildest animals you can ever see this closer.
You will be a total safe cage and of course, you will be instructed by experts on how to finish your experience without causing any problems to yourself or to sharks. I did the shark diving adventure with experts and they made sure that everyone gets enough views of these amazing creatures equally and waited enough time for each diver. If you go during winter like me (June, July are winter months for South Africa) you will have much more chance to see more sharks in a short time.
The experience costs 2050 Rand (146$ US) and it will cover for these followings
• Continental breakfast
• Snacks and refreshments on the boat
• Diving & Viewing
• Wet suites & dive equipment supplied and available in all sizes
• Afternoon tea upon arrival back at the harbor
• Certificate of your White Shark Experience
With a 25$ extra, you can also buy your video which usually looks pretty professional than the one you will take.
Wildlife Safari In Reserves
There are many great wildlife activities in South Africa, but of course, your stay in South Africa wouldn’t be complete without a safari with that big fancy car to witness the variety of wildlife in Africa. We had our wildlife experience in a private game reserve called Mount Camdeboo. It has the biggest guest house I’ve seen in that area and you will find a lot of luxury even in the middle of the wild. The accommodation experience was the best I had in South Africa by far.
For almost a week, we did safaris in the morning and afternoon to see all the wildlife inside Camdeboo. To be honest, I was quite satisfied with the experience since it was my first close contact with the wildlife. Still, since it’s a private game reserve, I should mention that if you visit Kruger National Park, you can still find a lot more variety of wilderness. Keep in mind that these reserves are bringing the animals from places like Kruger to protect them and also provide people a safer safari experience.
And here you go, now you have some good insights for a potential trip to South Africa. Don’t limit yourself with Cape Town, although definitely see Cape Town as well! You will soon find my post about Cape Town travel itinerary, and until then here are some useful stuff you may check out!
