5 Must Seen Places In Dubrovnik | Dubrovnik Travel Guide

Is Dubrovnik beautiful? It’s beautiful. Is it expensive? It’s very expensive indeed!

If you’ve never seen a city in the Adriatic before, if you like cities covered with walls and, Dubrovnik is a beautiful city. With the Game of Thrones scenes, now it’s even more crowded and expensive which steal a part of its charm. Think like this; If you want to visit the city walls, which is one of the most visited places without danger of crushing, you have to visit at 8 am in the morning, otherwise, you are traveling with 1 million others. Or you would sit and drink coffee somewhere and it costs 15 euros for two coffees.

Additional note: Dubrovnik uses Kuna, the local currency of Croatia, and 1 Euro is about 7 Kuna. When I talk about prices, I will use the Euro because it is easier to calculate.

When and how to get to Dubrovnik?

Whenever you ask to go to Dubrovnik, we think you can always go there. However, since the theme of the trip to Dubrovnik is mak getting lost in the old city streets ’walking around the city walls’ or visiting the beaches and swimming, it would be more advantageous to go when the weather is warm.

Usually, at the end of May, the temperature might be just as you want. It was hot enough to go into the sea, but it was cool enough to be tired of the sun. And I’ve never even seen any drops of rain once. If you are going to go in July – August, you should think about both the heat and the crowd once again. If it is raining in the winter time, Dubrovnik’s famous cable car and Lokrum Island boat trips are canceled. If these are not a problem for you, you can also consider going in the winter time.

Transportation to Dubrovnik Airport from the City

The easiest way to get from Dubrovnik to the old town is by an airport shuttle. One way costs about 6 euros per person and takes you down in front of the old town in 20 minutes. Shuttles from the old city center to the airport depart from the Dubrovnik cable car. You’il be back to the station in 20 minutes.

Now let me talk about some things to do in Dubrovnik! At the end of the article, I will also list the locations where Game of Thrones was shot for Game of Thrones fans.
You’ll love Dubrovnik the most when you pass through those narrow side streets and sit on the stairs and have a coffee.

Dubrovnik City Walls

Dubrovnik is a city hidden behind the walls. The walls, which have been used to protect the city throughout history, now enjoy tourists to watch the whole rooftop and view of Dubrovnik. These walls are at the top of the must-see places in Dubrovnik. The walls open at 8:30 in the morning and I think it is best to start to walk at this time because when the crowd comes, you cannot walk around easily because of the crowd.

I was at the gate of the walls at 8:30 and there was no one but me. At 9:30 it was already overcrowded. 2 hours to walk around the walls is quite enough. The walls are open to visitors until 19:30 in the evening.

Lovrijenac Fortress

We came to another point where Game of Thrones fans love it. Lovrijenac Castle was built on a huge rock in the 11th century and played a very important role in the defense of the city for years. Game of Thrones is also a place where some important scenes were shot.

I think the most beautiful city view of Dubrovnik is here. Opposite the city walls, the other side of the Adriatic coast. This castle was definitely our favorite place in Dubrovnik. As you walk to the castle you will come across beautiful streets. I was not in a hurry and went to the castle, enjoying the streets.

Stradun Street

This is the main street of Dubrovnik Old Town. Always alive and crowded. Celebrations and ceremonies of the city take place here.
What I did not like about this street was that it was very crowded and all the places were awfully expensive. I didn’t want to sit in any of the places I was looking for a little rest. When you enter this street to the right and left, you go up the steep side streets of the Old Town.

One end of Stradun Street is the ile Pile Gate ılan, which is considered the intermediate entrance gate of the Old Town, and the other end is the ‘Ploce Gate’. You can think of it as the exit of the Old Town. Boats leave for Lokrum Island. At the end of the street, you can take a look at the other tourist attractions while you reach the Ploca Gate. These are the historic clock tower, the Sponza Palace and the Dominican Monastery.

One of the indispensable tourist attractions of Dubrovnik is the On Great Onforio Fountain ’. This 15th-century fountain was built away from Dubrovnik and moved to the center of the city after its construction.

Lokrum Island

The UNESCO-protected Lokrum Island, which is visible from all over Dubrovnik, is a 15-minute boat ride from Dubrovnik’s Old Port. There are no settlements on this island. There is only natural life and a sparkling sea on this island! If you are coming to Dubrovnik in the summertime, it definitely deserves to be seen.

You can swim from all over the island. If you plan to swim here, you must bring sea shoes with you because the rocks are very sharp. If you pass inland on Lokrum Island, you can see an extremely beautiful lake in the middle of the cliffs. The name of this lake is the Dead Sea. Between the rocks and even inside the lake is not connected to the open sea. The color, nature, everything is great. If you want adrenaline, you can jump from rocks to the lake. One of the must-see places on Lokrum Island is the botanical garden. After seeing it, you can now spend the rest of your time at the Snack Bar Lacroma with a drink and a rest.

Apart from its own beaches, Dubrovnik has 3 very beautiful islands called ‘Elafiti Islands’ where you can take a boat trip. Their names are Kolacep, Sipan and Lopud.
